Playsafe® for busy bees
When it comes to our children's welfare, no amount of 'cutting corners', 'making do', or finding savings, can be contemplated. Their safety is paramount.
Which is why more than 200 square metres of Red Ayton Playsafe'® has been installed to form safety surfacing in the playground area of the Busy Bees Day Nursery, at James Paget Hospital, Gorleston, Norwich.
Playsafe®, a wet-pour rubber surfacing system that forms a durable and seamless surface, is specifically designed for applications where a safe impact-absorbing surface is required.
The cost-effective and environmentally-friendly system is available in a wide range of colours, which can be employed to create both an attractive surface finishes and (if required) bespoke designs.
The two-layer system comprises a Playsorb base; a 25-125 mm layer of recycled rubber shred, to which is applied a Playsafe top; a 15-20mm surface layer of coloured EPDM rubber crumb. The thickness of the Playsorb base varies according to the required critical fall height. Both layers are specially graded and bound together with a flexible polyurethane resin.
Playsafe® can be readily installed on both new and existing surfaces and can be opened for operation within 24 hours of application. The permeable surface helps to avoid standing water and unlike tile systems, has no joints.
Once installed, it requires minimal maintenance compared with loose fill material (e.g. sand and bark chippings) and will retain its critical fall height properties. Ayton Playsafe® can be employed for a wide range of safety surfacing and general paving applications including, stables, pedestrian areas, footpaths and driveways, as well as playgrounds and play areas.
At the Busy Bees Nursery, May Gurney worked in conjunction with Ayton Products to lay the base course. Main Contractor for the project was MS Oakes Limited, assisted by Sub Contractor Grace Resin Flooring Ltd. LSI Architects provided the Architectural input.
