Caring creche at Norwich nursery

Young children, being cared for the University of East Anglia’s crèche and nursery facility, are now further protected from possible accidents following the installation of the Ayton Playsafe® wet-pour rubber surfacing system.

More than 120 square metres of the soft surfacing was applied in November 2008, by the Ayton approved contractor - Gaysha Specialist Surfacing, whose building sector division also undertook the groundworks prior to the installation of Playsafe®.

Ayton Playsafe® forms a durable and seamless surface. It is specifically designed for applications where a safe impact-absorbing surface is required. The cost-effective and environmentally-friendly system is available in a wide range of colours, which can be employed to create both an attractive surface finishes and (if required) bespoke designs.

The two-layer system comprises a Playsorb base; a 25-125 mm layer of recycled rubber shred, to which is applied a Playsafe top; a 15-20mm surface layer of coloured EPDM rubber crumb. The thickness of the Playsorb base varies according to the required critical fall height. Both layers are specially graded and bound together with a flexible polyurethane resin.

Playsafe® can be readily installed on both new and existing surfaces and can be opened for operation within 24 hours of application. The permeable surface helps to avoid standing water and unlike tile systems, has no joints. Once installed, it requires minimal maintenance compared with loose fill material (e.g. sand and bark chippings) and will retain its critical fall height properties. Ayton Playsafe® can be employed for a wide range of safety surfacing and general paving applications including, stables, pedestrian areas, footpaths and driveways, as well as playgrounds and play areas.

The system has been fully tested and accredited to both BS 7188 and the European standard for impact-absorbing surfacing BS EN 1177. Both parents and teachers alike can now rest assured that the toddlers using the crèche are being looked after to the highest possible standards.
